1. AI boom set to fuel data centre deals in Asia this year

Asia Pacific, including Japan, has led dealmaking activities in the global data centre market this year, with M&A value totalling $840.47 million, more than half of the global amount, LSEG data showed.

In 2023, the region’s data centre deals hit a record high of $3.45 billion, according to LSEG. That tally is set to be surpassed this year with at least a couple of large transactions in the pipeline.

2. New safety commitments at AI Seoul Summit

Over a dozen of the world’s leading artificial intelligence firms made fresh commitments to ensure the safety of their technology on the opening day of the AI Seoul Summit, The event is co-hosted by the United Kingdom and South Korea. 

The agreement builds on consensus reached at the inaugural global AI safety summit in the UK last year. The 16 firms include US tech titans Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and IBM, as well as France’s Mistral AI and China’s Zhipu AI.

3. Singapore launches AI safety management toolkit with Temasek, IBM, others

Singapore’s AI Verify Foundation (AIVF) has introduced AI Verify Project Moonshot, a toolkit that focuses on managing safety and security risks in AI applications.

Launched in collaboration with DataRobot, IBM, Singtel, and Temasek, the toolkit combines red teaming, benchmarking, and baseline testing for large language models (LLMs) into one platform.

4. Singapore IMDA Publishes AI Governance Framework

The Singapore Infocommunications Media Development Authority (IMDA) has published a ‘Model AI Governance Framework for Generative AI’ proposing actions in nine key areas including data, content provenance, testing, and security among others aimed at building a “trusted AI ecosystem”.

The Framework was first published in 2019 and updated in 2020, with the current publication which was released for public consultation in January 2024, seeking to address specific artificial intelligence (AI) risks stemming from generative AI, including hallucination and copyright infringement. The Framework outlines nine dimensions.

5. Shanghai Lingang New Area Releases Whitelists for Data Export, Facilitating Cross-Border Data Flows

The Lingang New Area of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone (FTZ) has released the first batch of trial lists of general data for three sectors, facilitating cross-border data flows for companies operating in the area.

This announcement closely follows the release of the Tianjin FTZ’s Negative List, which similarly seeks to facilitate cross-border data flows for companies operating in the FTZ by specifying the types of data that are restricted from being exported without certain approval procedures.
